Frequently Asked Questions

Queensland Surgery Centre FAQs

Booking an Appointment

The first step in seeing one of our specialists is obtaining a referral from your GP. This allows us to understand your medical history and ensures you are eligible for any applicable Medicare rebates.

Once you have your referral, please forward it to our reception team at reception@queenslandsurgerycentre.com.au. Your specialist will review (triage) your referral to ensure you are seen within the most appropriate timeframe.

After we receive your referral, you will receive a confirmation text message from our team. If you are a new patient, this message will include a secure link to complete our New Patient Form.

If your referral relates to a skin lesion, we may also request a photo to assist your surgeon in triaging your case appropriately.

After your specialist has reviewed and triaged your referral, a personalised care plan will be created. One of our medical secretaries will then contact you to arrange your initial appointment at a suitable time.

Consultation fees with our specialists range from $200 to $300. Most consultations are eligible for a Medicare rebate, and our reception team will confirm the exact fee and rebate details when you book your appointment.

Please note that private health insurance does not cover consultation fees.

Queensland Surgery Centre is conveniently located at Suite 9, Level 1, 33 Racecourse Road, Hamilton.

For those driving,  street parking is available nearby.

Our clinic is also accessible via bus, train or ferry. Ascot Train Station is the closest train station on the Doomben line, roughly a 10-15 minute walk from Racecourse Road. The Bretts Wharf ferry terminal (CityCat) is a short stroll away on Kingsford Smith Drive.

Surgical Procedures & Information

Whether a procedure can be performed on the same day as your consultation depends on the type of surgery required. In some cases, your surgeon may offer a “see-and-do”, which combines a short consultation with the procedure.

Not all procedures are suitable for same-day surgery, and this is determined in advance. Our administration team will advise you on whether a “see-and-do” is appropriate for your situation.

Our surgeons operate from a range of private hospitals, including:

  • Brisbane Private Hospital
  • Herston Private Hospital
  • Mater Hospital Rockhampton
  • Hervey Bay Surgical Hospital
  • North West Private Hospital

You will be informed which hospital your surgeon operates from when you are ready to book surgery.

After your consultation, our surgical secretaries will assist you in booking your procedure.

  • In-room surgery (Wickham Terrace): We can secure a suitable date and time.
  • Hospital surgery: A date can be scheduled, but specific times are provided approximately one week prior to surgery.

Once a surgical plan is established, you will receive a surgical package via email (typically 1–3 days post-consultation). This package includes:

  • Your surgery details
  • An outline of your surgeon’s fees
  • Estimated rebates from Medicare and private health

Important: Please check with your health fund to confirm coverage using the item number(s) listed in the Informed Financial Consent.

Our surgeons do not participate in private health “Gap Schemes”. For complex procedures, exceptions may be considered. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please discuss options with our medical secretaries.

  • Hospital surgery: Payment must be made at least 7 days prior to secure your theatre spot. Payments can be made via bank transfer or credit card (details provided in your surgical package).
  • In-room surgery: Payment is required on the day of surgery and can be made via EFTPOS.

Your Informed Financial Consent will provide a cost breakdown, including approximate rebates from Medicare and your private health fund.

  • Procedures performed in our rooms are not eligible for private health rebates.
  • Claims are submitted on your behalf (1–3 days post-surgery).
  • Rebate amounts are estimates and may change depending on pathology results and fund policies.

One week prior to surgery, you will receive an email outlining:

  • Your hospital presentation time
  • Fasting instructions
  • Pre-admission documents

These documents must be completed prior to surgery.

Some medications, such as blood thinners, may need to be temporarily ceased before surgery. Your specialist will provide personalised instructions, and you will receive a reminder via text if applicable.

Most procedures are day surgeries, with patients typically in hospital for 5–6 hours.

  • Patients receiving general anaesthetic or sedation require a responsible adult to collect them and stay with them for 24 hours.
  • Overnight or extended stays will be advised by your specialist.

Some patients require a follow-up appointment with our nurses. You will be advised on the day of surgery.

  • No fees are associated with these appointments.

  • You may choose to see your local GP for post-operative care; please notify our team if you do.

  • Not all patients require follow-up, but all are welcome for review.

Histology results are generally available 3–5 days post-surgery.

  • Results will be reviewed by your specialist before being shared.

  • You will receive a text message with outcomes and a follow-up letter containing results approximately one week post-surgery.
